Without a doubt our best performance of the season to date; when you needed to stand up & be strong you were, when you needed to keep a cool head you did, when you had to play collectively as a team you did, and when that little bit of individual flair was needed it was there - your reward a massive three points which takes us that little bit closer to the division 1 title, one of our goals for this season!
As you would expect from two teams fighting for the title the match was always going to be a hard fought and tense affair, but you showed the better attitude, spirit and fight throughout and fully deserved the victory.
The first 10/15 minutes were pretty even with both sides creating what can only be described as half chances before we managed to get the break through; a quick exchange of passes between Shaun & Josh saw the ball laid into Marks path and he had no hesitation in lobbing the keeper from 15 yards out for his 25th of the season - advantage Eagles!
This gave us that little lift that was needed and with the new look defence of Dan, Brandon, Jack & Joe working hard to limit Bays opportunities we started to carry the game to them but despite creating a number of chances couldn’t find a way past their keeper that was until Ted hit what may well turn out to be the goal of the season, it’s certainly right up there as a genuine contender. Again Josh who played unselfishly up front all game held the ball up before touching it to Ted who’s ferocious shot from fully 30 yards hit the underside of the bar before bouncing over the line and in to the net – a goal given by the Bay linesman despite their players protests. Into half-time with a two goal lead, which may have been more had Marks late strike hit the inside of the post rather than the outside which took the ball into the side netting, which some amongst our support mistook for a goal!
A calming half time team talk seemed to work well as we continued to take the game to our visitors and we increased our lead further with another goal of the season contender after Ted had been fouled for the umpteenth time in the game.
With both Shaun & Ted standing over the ball you knew that the resultant free kick would be something special and I’m sure that many a player who enjoys his football at a higher standard would have been proud of what followed; a curling left foot strike that found the top corner of the net, an unstoppable shot that even the best of keepers would have struggled to have saved, but one which sent the boys into riotous celebrations. To give the Bay side credit they continued to fight to get on the score sheet and they got a consolation goal after a momentary lapse of concentration in defence, when nobody took control of the situation, allowed one of their strikers room to get a shot away across Matt and in to the far corner. Further chances followed for both sides with Robbie having the clearer cut of them all, Luke played him clear of the Bay defence and after rounding the keeper he narrowly failed to steer his shot inside the post.
Man of the Match went to league debutant Joe; who would have thought that it was his first game at left back!!
