Another good victory which maintains our unbeaten start to the season and keeps us on course for another top two finish and a return trip to Margate!
Playing on an unfamiliar and not particularly good pitch didn’t affect the way we played at all, and against a side that only had one way of playing – a long ball for the lone forward to chase – it was always going to be a comfortable afternoon as long as we cut out any of the silly errors that have cost us goals in recent games, which I’m pleased to say we did.
We gave a start to our new signing Josh who looked anything but the ‘new boy’ as he slotted into the way we play from the start and looked very comfortable when in possession or bringing other’s into the play. His addition to the squad will bring added competition for places which will only be healthy for all of you boys, as we need to start upping our performances a little to ensure we stay on track for some silverware this season.
From the off we were causing the Highfield defence problems with some slick interchanging of passes down both flanks, Shaun & George linking up well as were Luke & Josh and with Ted & Dan bossing the midfield it was only a matter of time before we were going to score and what a good team goal it was. A ball forward to Josh was laid out to Luke in space and his quick pass to Ted on the edge of box completely fooled the Highfield defence allowing Ted time to pick his spot and rifle a low shot into the bottom corner to put us one up.
Another equally as good if not better goal followed with Ted playing a simple ball into Luke who found the overlapping Tyler in space and his pinpoint cross was fired home by the right foot of George who was unmarked in the middle of the box.
Any threat that Highfield posed was dealt with well by Brandon & Jack in the centre and both Tyler & Shane in the full back slots which saw Matt rarely troubled into making a save, although he did pull off a tremendous save from a penalty, oddly taken by the Highfield keeper after a dubious decision was given against Jack – no one fell to the ground and the striker got a shot away but Matt was fast to react to smother it!
This seemed to spur us into action again and when Ted’s header from Shaun’s corner was only parried by the keeper Luke was on hand at the far post to prod home from a yard or so out to make it 3-0. We added a fourth before half time with a well taken penalty of our own, Ted went on a mazy run inside the box only to be brought down and Josh had no hesitation in smashing the ball home from 12 yards out, so into the break with a four goal cushion and in reality the game sown up.
A few changes for the second half, Mark on for Josh, Conor on for Tyler and Robbie on for Dan kept the side fresh and we were soon again creating chances with Ted, Shaun (who was unlucky all afternoon not to get his name on the score sheet), Treeby & Mark all going close but not be able to find the net. On another day the first chance goes in and you score a hat full, but nobody can criticise the effort and attitude of all of the players who were getting the opportunities to score as we were always looking dangerous when going forward and wanted to create more even when chances were going begging.
A minor slip in defence not helped by a high ball into the sun allowed the lone Highfield forward in to score a consolation goal, but the result of the game was never in doubt due to our superb first half display.
A well deserved victory earned by playing some very good football, with our passing & movement causing problems all game long, and most importantly another 3 points towards our target of being champions this season.
Man of the Match went to Ted who was at the heart of many of the good things that we as a team achieved today.
